Why do people commit crimes?

Some commit a crime such as shoplifting out of desperation, especially when food is concerned. My theory on why people commit crimes is to fit in. Teenagers commit crimes to feel accepted into a group or gang. Same thing goes for adults. Sometimes gangs use crimes as a way to join a gang. If someone wanted to join the gang people who are part of the gang could say that they have to go steal something from a certain place in order to be accepted into the gang. But people try to join these gangs or commit other crimes because they feel it is what they need to live. whether its because there are voices in your head telling you to do it or there are real people telling you. The link below is an article about people who were used as slaves and then forced to commit a crime, and then got charged  for the crime even tho they did not have a choice.

  1. Hi Ayla,
Thanks for the post. "Fitting in" is an example of Social Control Theory (of Travis Hirschi). which argues that those who have attachment and commitment to something and who are involved in society which then fosters a belief in following the conventional social norms. This has evolved into the modern General Theory of Crime.
